Grammar Instruction: What Teachers Say

This article focuses on the studies of Brenda Arnett Petruzella and the debate of teaching grammar in a school setting. Many people are torn on this idea and believe that teaching grammar to students is a waste of time. Brenda has supported research that teaching grammar to students has no positive effect of their writings. She claims that many teachers agree that ridding grammar from classroom criteria is a good idea. She states that many college students who received English degrees and became student teachers were ridiculed by the professors they taught for because they were told grammar was not important. these professors stated that their senior students in high school had a better understanding of grammar then their student teachers. With all this said and done, the article began to focus on what researchers believe about this topic and what actual teachers believe about this topic. The article stated that when researchers see this debate and find grammar useless they are talking about the memorization of vocabulary and in-depth material. Teachers believe that grammar is important but they focus more on the fundamentals. Teaches believe that grammar is a necessity in the form of sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling. Teachers say that without this core, fundamental training students would be lost in the grammar world. Teaching grammar in a school setting has been a debate for some time now. Many are torn on this idea and this article shows both sides of the argument. Now it's your time to decide.

  1. I think grammar should be taught in elementary school. It helps build the foundation to start writing more in depth. Without grammar skills it would be very difficult to write essays, resumes, and many more essential papers needed in life. Grammar should be taught in the classroom.

  2. Grammar is definitely a fundamental part of education in my opinion, and the fact that many don't find it important is shocking. Grammar supplies the building blocks to being capable of holding n intellectual conversation amongst your peers or colleagues as you get higher in education. Its really odd to me that the same people who down Ebonics and say that standard English is a more sufficient way of speaking are now the same ones that say grammar docent matters, its starting to become quite contradictory. What is it that people really want?

  3. Grammar is very important. I believe that grammar should be a part of everyone's education. We are speaking and writing all the time, and it is essential to do it properly. Good grammar shows that the person has well structured sentences and speech ability. Those who do not like grammar or English tend to see grammar in education as a waste of time. Those who feel that grammar and English are an important part of life find grammar to be important and worthwhile. If we did not have grammar, we would all sound uneducated. There would be no "smart people" in the world.

  4. I believe that grammar is very important because it not only expresses the proper way of speaking and writing, it helps people to not sound foolish in different settings. If grammar was not taught at schools, students would be denied a proper education. It would not in the long run help the person who does not know howe to correctly structure a sentence. This article takes an interesting viewpoint, but I have to say I TOTALLY disagree.

  6. I definitely believe that it is important to learn proper grammar, and I know first hand that it can improve writing. I work in the Writing Center and tutor students with wide ranges of abilities. When students have poor grammatical knowledge and abilities, they are very limited in what they can say and often have an inability to express what they want to say. This is especially seen with international students because, understandably, they do not have as a good of a grasp at grammatical conventions. While the language barrier is a huge part of why they have a hard time expressing thoughts, their problems with grammar prove to be quite confining. This is because grammar DOES affect writing.

  7. Grammar is an important subject that should be taught in schools. This shouldn't be something that is dropped from school criteria. If high school seniors know more about grammar than a student teacher, then there is something obviously wrong there. Grammar is important when forming sentences, using punctuation, and speaking correct. Without grammar, everyone would sound uneducated.

  8. I think it is important that grammar is taught at a young age because it does improve writing skills. I think grammar is the worst thing to drop from a school criteria because students will be writing formally throughout their entire lives. I think it is very important to learn all aspects of grammar and without grammar it would be difficult to learn another language.
